Certainly Hoplites make a fantastic line infantry, but Citizen Cavalry doesnt have the shock impact that is desirable in a hammer unit and Sparta in particular seem to have nothing but high-defense spear units. What do you guys tend to use for flanking when playing as these factions 32 comments share save hide report 100 Upvoted This thread is archived New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast Sort by best. Leave all those newfangled, feminine and morally suspect tactics like oblique order and hammer anvil to amateurs and barbarians like the Macedonians. They have what might be the strongest anvil in the game, but as a counterbalance they have pretty weak hammers. What I usually do is get 2 citizen cav just to defend my flanks. Once Ive locked all the enemy troops into an infantry line engagement, I swing those peltasts around the enemy flanks and throw javs into their backs. It tends to melt away enemy units far faster than most cav charges. You may also be able to recruit mercenary thessalian cav in Macedonia if you really want shock cav level 2 3 points 5 years ago Peltasts can actually be a really vicious hammer if you save their ammo and then unloaded into the enemy line from the flanks and rear. They are not fast, but they have a decent charge for infantry and are better in melee than many sword units. In practice I guess it looks more like a vise with the enemy getting ground to dust between two lines of hoplitespikemen. When that is not enough for them to rout i use my Hippeus lancers to send them back on a trip to the underworld. A true general stays back and only commits himself at the planned time or to turn the tide Continue this thread level 2 Original Poster 1 point 5 years ago Haha. The lancers I can get behind, but arent Thorax Swords Thracians I feel like I would bring shame to Sparta by even fielding them. Keep in mind theyll lose against any cavalry excepting very light and light. Dont be afraid to supplement your armies with field artillery. While the humble ballista has been rolled back from the glory of the early days, it can still disrupt an enemy line or weaken a generals unit. They wont solve all your problems, primarily because of cost, but theyll give you options for swordscavalry to go around the enemy flanks once they engage your line. Sparta is pretty much the only Hellenic faction that has trouble hammering.
